ABSTRACT

The increasing complexity and volume of financial transactions in modern organizations have rendered traditional manual auditing methods inefficient and error-prone, especially in the Nigerian context. This research presents the design and implementation of a Computer-Based Auditing System (CBAS) aimed at automating and enhancing the auditing process for improved accuracy, efficiency, and compliance. The study employs a mixed-methods approach to analyze existing auditing practices, identify their limitations, and develop a prototype system using Python and MySQL. Key features of the system include automated data ingestion, anomaly (detection, real-time reporting, role-based access control, and compliance checks. The literature review highlights global trends in digital auditing, including the use of Artificial Intelligence (Al), blockchain, and cloud computing, emphasizing their transformative impact on the auditing profession. The developed CBAS addresses critical challenges faced by Nigerian SMEs and public sector agencies, such as data integration, limited analytical capabilities, and regulatory compliance. The findings demonstrate that a well-designed CBAS can significantly improve audit quality, reduce financial irregularities, and support organizational transparency. The system provides a foundational framework for future enhancements, including integration with enterprise systems and advanced analytics for continuous auditing.
