ABSTRACT
The Industrial Training component of
undergraduate education is critical to bridging academic learning with
real-world application. In the College of Physical and Applied Sciences
(COLPAS) at Michael Okpara University ofAgriculture, Umudike, the manual logbook
system has traditionally served as the primary tool for documentation ofstudent
experiences during the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
However, the manual format poses significant limitations, including
inefficiencies in feedback delivery, difficulty in performance monitoring, and
increased risk of loss or damage to records. This project seeks to address
these challenges by designing and implementing a web-based electronic logbook
tailored specifically to the needs of COLPAS students and supervisors. Adopting
a purely qualitative research approach, the study utilized a prototype system
design and evaluation methodology. The approach comprised an in-depth analysis
of the existing manual logbook process, stakeholder interviews, and iterative
user-centered design practicesto ensure the final prototype met the contextual
expectations ofits primary users: students, supervisors, and administrative
staff. The system was developed using modern web technologies, with careful
attention to usability, role-based access control, secure data handling, and
mobile responsiveness. Key features ofthe developed system include digital
student log entry submission, weekly progress monitoring by supervisors,
comment-enabled review modules, and administrative dashboards for system
oversight and analytics. A high-level interaction flow, system architecture,
and user interface sketches were incorporated in the design to visualize the
logic and flow of activities. Usability testing was conducted with selected COLPAS
students and supervisors, and feedback indicated significant improvements in
efficiency, accessibility, and clarity of documentation over the manual system.
The study concludes that an electronic logbook system customized for COLPAS not
only enhances the quality of experiential learning documentation but also
fosters better accountability and timely feedback. Recommendations were made
for scaling the system across other colleges within the university and
integrating with institutional databases for broader academic reporting.
