ABSTRACT
The study
examined students’ motivational drive as correlate of instructional
effectiveness in Universities in Abia State. Six research questions were
answered and six null hypotheses formulated and tested at 0.05 level of
significance guided the study. The study adopted a correlational research
design. The population of this study was 608 final year students of 2018/2019
academic session. This comprises of 431 students from College of Education, Michael Okpara
University of Agriculture, Umudike which constituted 95 final year students in
the Department of Industrial Technology Education, 104 final year students in
the Department of Agricultural and Home Economics Education, 120 final year
students in the Department of Science Education, no students in the Department
of Educational Management, no final year students in the Department of Library
and Information Science, 53 final Year Students in the Department of Psychology
Education and 59 final year students in the Department of Adult and Continuing
Education and 177 final year students
from Faculty of Education in Abia State University Uturu which constitutes of
51 final year students from the Department of Educational Administration and
Planning, 20 final year students from the Department of Psychological
Foundations, 43 final year students from the Department of Educational
Foundations, 31 final year students from the Department of Curriculum and
Teacher Education and 32 final year students from the Department of Science
Education. There was no sampling
technique for the study since the population of the study was manageable and
controllable by the researcher. Data for the study was collected using
researcher’s self-developed questionnaires titled ‘Students Motivational Drive
Questionnaire (SMDQ), and Instructional Effectiveness Questionnaire’’ (IEQ). The
instruments were validated by two experts from the Department of Educational
Management and one expert from the Department of Science Education specialized
in Measurement and Evaluation, all from MOUAU. The reliability of the
instruments was determined using Cronbach Alpha Method which yielded an alpha
of.71 and .80
respectively which were considered reliable. Data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to answer the research
questions while linear regression analysis was used to test the null hypotheses
at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that adequate campus shuttle
service significantly to a positive high extent relate to instructional
effectiveness in universities in Abia state. The findings also revealed that
students’ medical services significantly to a very high extent relate to instructional
effectiveness in universities in Abia state and that students’ motivational
drive significantly to a positive very high extent relate to instructional
effectiveness in universities in Abia state. The study recommended amongst
others that University administrations should collaborate with major transport
companies and Unions in the provision of adequate and effective intra and inter
campus shuttles for easy movement of students to lecture halls in the
universities. It also recommended that university administration should equip
her clinics for efficient medical services to both the students and all the
categories of staff in the universities.
