Abstract

The study investigated the qualification of Biology teachers as predictor of secondary school students' performance in external examinations in Aba North L.G.A. of Abia State. Corrclational survey design was adopted to determine the degree of relationship between teacher qualification and student's academic performance in Biology, The population comprised 156 teachers and the summary of student performance in Biology for the 202 1/2022 academic session WASSCE. The sample 'as the same with the population sini:e it is manageable. Two rcse::irch questions an<l one

hypothesi~ guided the study. The research questions were analyzed using Regression, Anova and Mean.

while t-test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The study showed that

p1..rfurmauL"e of stuJcnts taught by qualified teachers Was higher than those taught by less qualified

teachers. Ry implication. teachers with higher academic qualifications are more likely to plan

individualize learning, guide and encourage individual students' learning. plan a productive lesson and

diagnose students problems. On the basis of this, it was recommended that the Federal and State

Ministries of Education should encourage teachers with NCE and ONO to further their education;

and Government should monitor equal distribution of qualified teachers to schools located in rural and

urban areas among others.
