Abstract
The Study was designed to explore the pattern
ofenrolment ofstudents by sex. The sample comprised all male and female
students enrolled in Science education courses in six (60%) out of 10
institutions awarding the National Certificate in Education in Eastern Nigeria.
Enrolment figures for 1996/97-1998/99 academic sessions were obtained from
Record Departments ofthe sampled institutions. Two null hypotheses were tested
using Chi-square statistics. Ratios of males and females enrolled were also
computed. Sex differences in enrolment were observed in favour offemales, (M:
F, 2:3) although the difference was not statistically significant (P < 0.
05). ’Significant sex differences were noted in favour of females in the number
of students enrolled in the various science course combinations. While more
females than males enrolled in Agricultural Science courses, more males than
females enrolled in Physics and Chemistry. Male: Female enrolment ratio in most
of the Colleges of Education ranged from 1:2 to 1:6. Enrolments were generally
less than adequate. The negative effects that are anticipated from this trend
may spell doom for Universal Basic Education Programme except intervention
programmes' and policies arc putin place to encourage increased enrolment
ofboth sexes into ScienceEducation courses.
