Abstract
The study investigated the effect of peer
tutoring methods on students' interest in mathematics among senior secondary
schools in abia. The study used a pre-test, post-test quasiexperimental design
with non-equivalent control groups. The study's population consisted of 4481
Abia State Secondary School II Students. The study's sample consisted of six
intact classes of 165 SS II students from three purposively selected schools.
Two hypotheses guided the investigation. The researcher designed a 30-item
Mathematics Interest Inventory (MII) to collect data. The instrument had a
consistency coefficient of 0.82, calculated by Cronbach alpha. The hypotheses
were tested using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) at a significance level of
0.05. The study's findings revealed that peer tutoring has a significant impact
on students' interest in mathematics. Also, there is an interaction effect of
gender and peer tutoring strategy on students' mean interest scores in
mathematics. Sequel to the findings of this study, it was advised that
educators should provide an enabling environment for students to study
collaboratively to enhance their interest in the subject matter as well as take
gender factor into account during peer tutoring sessions to optimize their
