ABSTRACT
The study examined capacity building of lecturers as correlates of quality service delivery of universities in South East, Nigeria. The study was guided by six specific objectives, six research questions and six hypotheses were formulated for the study. The design of the study was a correlational research design. The population of the study is 7,662 senior lecturers in the five federal universities in South East, Nigeria. A sample size of 766 respondents was selected from the entire population. Two instruments were developed by the researcher for data collection for the study. The first instrument titled Capacity Building of Lecturer Questionnaire (CBLQ) which contained 42 items was designed to collect information on Capacity Building of Lecturers. The second instrument was titled: Quality Service Delivery Questionnaire (QSDQ) contained 14 items. Reliability coefficients of .79 and .91 were obtained for the capacity building needs and quality service delivery in universities respectively which indicated that the instrument is highly valid and reliable for the study. The data collected through the administration of the instruments were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation to answer research questions and Linear Regression to test the hypotheses at .05- level of significance. Based on the findings of the study it was revealed that; pedagogical skills development of lecturers to a positive high extent correlate to quality service delivery in universities, information and communication technology skills development of lecturers to a positive high extent relates to quality service delivery in universities, In-service training of lecturers to a positive high extent correlate to quality service delivery in universities, leadership skills development of lecturers to a positive moderate extent correlate to quality service delivery in universities, innovative skills development of lecturers to a positive high extent correlate to quality service delivery in universities and conflict management skills development of lecturers to a positive moderate extent correlate to quality service delivery in universities. The study recommended that; Government through the Ministry of Education and university governing bodies should ensure capacity building of lecturers through pedagogical skills development, information and communication development, in-service training, leadership skills development, innovative skills development and conflict management skills to improve their service delivery for greater academic performance in universities, Lecturers in universities should participate in capacity building programmes to improve their service delivery in universities among others.
