ABSTRACT

The research is a descriptive research design on the management and use of grey literature in Imo State University Library. The major purpose was to investigate the management and use of grey literature in Imo State University Library. The study has a population of 55 which was totally enumerated for the study It was guided by five objectives and five research questions. Three data collection instruments were; a structured questionnaire, interview schedule and observation checklist. Data were analyzed using percentage and mean scores. Data analysis revealed that grey materials are available in Imsu library. Furthermore, findings revealed that classification, cataloguing, indexing and abstracting and compiling access list were the method adopted for processing grey literature in IMsu library. The result also showed that the grey Literature Resources are preserved in IMSU library adopting cabinets with content description, pamphlet boxes with content description, vertical files collection with content description, microfiche mechanism, computers and accessories, shelves with labels, binding and repair and scanning of grey literature as method of preserving grey literature. Inadequate fund, absence of acquisition policy, wrong perception of librarians on grey literature, hard to find and access, lack of national bibliography for grey literature, unwillingness of originating bodies to release copies of documents, insufficient bibliographic details, lack of subject specialist with IT knowledge, lack of commercial publishers to contact, unsuitability of standard classification schemes, difficulties in applying AACR II cataloguing rules, no standard preservation policy, lack of modern preservation facilities, no provision for computerization, are some of the challenges encountered in the management of grey literature in IMSU library. The study proffered Strategies for the management of grey literature resources in IMSU library which includes Provision of national bibliography for grey literature resources, employment of subject specialist with IT knowledge, application of AACR II cataloguing rules), setting up standard in organizing grey literature, arrangement by subject contents, filling of conference papers in pamphlet boxes and vertical file collection, production of in-house bulletins. The study concluded that for proper use of grey literature, it must be effectively managed.
