Manual Cataloguing Versus Electronic Cataloguing: A Comparative Study Of Cataloguer's Preference In Public University Libraries In Abia State:- John Constance C
ABSTRACT
Over the years, cataloguing is done manually, but
in the recent times and in many places especially abroad cataloguing is
completed electronically. However, the preference of cataloguers in public
university libraries is still an illusion. Such gap in literature leads to this
study which investigated cataloguers' preference for cataloguing in public .
university libraries in Abia State. Four research questions were answered. The
population of the study is 23 comprising all the cataloguers at Michael Okpara
University of Agriculture, Umudike and Abia State University library Uturu.
The· instrument was validated by three experts from library infonnation science
department. The data for the study were collected by the researcher, 23 copies
of the questionnaire were distributed to 23 respondent but 18 copies were
retrieved. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistic such as
mean and standard deviation to answer the research question. It was found from
the study that there is high use of manual cataloguing in the two institutions
studied. It was also found that the factors affecting librarian preferred
format of cataloguing is the lack of necessary ICT skills, limited computer and
inadequate fund in universities libraries and the ways of implementing
cataloguers preferred fonnat of cataloguing is by training and re-training of
staff, provision of basic infrastructure and privation of adequate funds
