ABSTRACT

The study examined the availability and utilization of information resources in National lihrwy of Nigeria (NLN), Abia State branch, Umuahia. During the course of this research, survey research design was adopted where data were sourced primarily through questionnaire instruments. 132 respondents from National library users for the week formed the sample size of this work. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics based on mean scores and standard deviation. The objectives were to identify the type of information resources utilized, the extent of their utilization in, purpose of users in utilizing the information resources, problems associated with the utilization of information resources and strategies of enhancing the information resources in !\'(ltional Library Nigeria, Umuahia, Abia state. The five objectives of the study were formed as the jive research questions. The instruments used for the data collection of the study are questionnaire and observation checklist. The result reveals that out of the seventeen resources listed to determine their level of availability, Melve were greatly available. while only five were least available. The available resources range from book and non-book resources. The available ones include: - texthooks. magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias', government publications, novels. handbooks. journals, manuals, maps and newspapers. And out of this information resources electronic resources, directories, guides, conference proceedings, technical reports and students research works are not functional. It is recommended that adequate information resources be made available, training and retraining of staffs for effective service delivery and ensuring effective utilization of resources.
