Reading Habits of Secondary School Teachers in Abia State: A study of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Demonstration Secondary School, Umudike :- Ojike Sarah O
ABSTRACT
This study examined the Reading Habits of
Secondary School Teachers in Abia State. A study of Michael Okpara University
of Agriculture Demonstration Secondary School, Uinudike (MOUAU DSS). The
purpose ofthis study was; to ascertain the type of materials read by teachers
in MOUAU DSS; to examine the purpose why teachers of MOUAU DSS read; to
determine the attitude of MOUAU DSS teachers towards reading; to determine the
challenges militating against the reading habits ofMOUAU DSS teachers and to
ascertain the measures to overcome the challenges militating against reading
habits of MOUAU DSS teachers. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the
study, the population of the study consist of 96 teaching staff. Complete
census sampling technique was adopted for the study and the instrument for the
data collection was questionnaire titled: Reading Habits of Secondary School
Teachers (RHSST). The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics
of mean scores with the use of statistical package for social science
(SPSS).The study found out that teachers in Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture, Demonstration Secondary School, Umudike read inspirational books,
teaching subject textbooks, Christian novel, serial materials and reference
materials. It also discovered that the challenges militating against their
reading habits were poor economic hardship, astronomical prices of books, low
self esteem, poor social relationship, lack of motivation and distraction from
television and film viewing. Recommendations made to solve the problems include
avoiding long hours of watching television, establishing functional libraries,
government should help in purchasing books for schools and school
administration should orient teachers on need to read, this will help teachers
to have good reading habits
