ABSTRACT

This study investigated information needs and seeking behavior of undergraduate students in the department oflibrary and information science in Abia State University, Uturu. It is a descriptive survey research which used the questionnaire and observation checklist as instruments for data collection. The population ofstudy consist of 108 students in three different years ofstudy. The entire population was usedfor the study as it is a manageable population, there is no sampling technique for this study as it adopts a complete census. The questionnaire was distributed and collected through the help of the course representative and their assistants. Data obtained were analyzed usingfrequency tables, simple percentage and mean scores. Result of the study revealed that library and information science students need personal health information, academic or research information, current affairs ■i information, business information, industrial attachment/employment and sports/entertainment. It was also revealed that the extent students of Library and Information Science in Abia State University, Uturu derive satisfaction from library resources is high rangingfrom journals reference materials and audio-visuals that the behaviors ofstudents oflibrary and information science in Abia State University Ututru as they search for information include discussing and seekingfor help from library staff, consult the catalogue, askfellow studentsfor help, browse directlyfrom the shelves and browse through the internet. The library lack needed materials, poor power supply, poor conducive environment and negative attitude ofthe library staff. It is recommendedamong other things that the library should be stockedwith relevant materials and alternative power supply should be provided such as procuring high capacity generators and the use ofsolar power in order to leverage the challenge of epilepticpower supply
