ABSTRACT
The aim of
this study was to determine the extent ofICT integration in Michael Okpara
University ofAgriculture Library, Umudike. In order to achieve this, four (4)
research objectives were formulated and four (4) research questions, answered.
Literature were reviewed under conceptual framework, review of empirical
studied and summary ofliterature review. Furthermore, critical review
ofliterature show that a lot have been done in trying to discover the
application of ICTs in academic libraries, the importance of the application as
well as the challengesfacing the integration ofICTs in academic libraries, but
none ofthese studies have tried to reveal the extent ofintegration ofICTs in
MOUAU Library. This is the identified gap in literature which the studyfilled.
The descriptive survey design was adoptedfor the study. The studypopulation was
2572 made up of2517 users and 55 staff of MOUAU Library. A multi stage sampling
technique of complete census and purposive sampling technique were used to draw
a sample size of257 respondentsfrom the entire population. A combination
ofobservation checklist and a researcher-made questionnaire were the
instruments for data collection. A total of257 copies ofthe questionnaire were
distributed with the help of three research assistants to the staff and users
of the library, while the researcher personally observed the ICTs integrated
and recorded it on the observation checklist. Data generated from the study
were analysed using descriptive statistics of mean scores and frequency counts
with the use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 software.
A criterion mean of 2.50 was chosen for the study. Responses to the questions
asked, data collected and analyzedwerepresented infrequency tables.
Findingsfrom the study show the integration oflarge number ofICTs in MOUAU
Library such as laptop, desktop computers, CD-ROM, DVD ROM, Local Area Network
(LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), Internet network/facilities, projectors, etc.
It also revealed partially high extent ofICT integration in MOUAULibrary, among
otherfindings. In conclusion, the study recommends government support on
provision ofstable power supply, proper ICT seminar/ workshop in the
university, provision ofgrants and aids by the government and the university,
staff training and orientation, establishment ofnational research centerforICT,
etc.
