ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to assess the
acquisition of academic library resources, sources and methods in Imo State
University library Owerri. The research design used was a descriptive survey.
The study population is 24 consists of 16 professional and 8 non-professional
staffofImo State University Library, Owerri. A sample size of 24 professional
and non professional staff was drawn using complete census sampling technique.
ALikert-four point rating scales were used as data collection instruments. The
rating scale was distributed techniques to 24 staffs all was returned and usedfor
analysis. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean
scores, frequency and percentage with the use of Statistical Package for Social
Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The study found that the level ofsatisfaction
ofstudents towards school library information resources which ranges from
Novels, Textbooks. Atlases and maps, Dictionaries, Newspapers and magazines,
palmphlets, Poetry and Charts, that Leisure reading, to do assignment and
homework, to read and borrow library books, to readfor examinations only, to
read newspapers and magazine andforfurther research are the purpose ofstudents
utilization ofthe library. It also revealed that the major Problems that hinder
the effective utilization ofschool library resources in Federal Government
Girls College Umuahia includes lack of current reading materials, lack of
informational professional/ librarians for processing reading materials, lack
of furniture’s,restricted reading hours,lack of proper catalogues/calaloguing
of library, and library is not properly lighted.The recommendations made to
improve the use of school library resources include: proper orientation
programmes should be given to the students to add to the use of libraries,
Standby generators should be provided by school administrators to improve on
power outage, use ofthe library should be introduced in the school curriculum,
the need to strengthen collection development, the needfor current materials in
the libraryforstudents ’ use, need to employ qualified librarians, and the library
operating hour should be extended beyond schools hours.
