ABSTRACT
This study
investigated the impact of adult literacy programmes on political empowerment of
women in Anambra State. The problem of the
study focused on why the problems of use of adult literacy programmes should
solve still persist inspite of efforts by stakeholders on education to use
literacy to improving political empowerment of women and improve their lives
and livelihood. Five specific objectives and five research questions were posed
with the intention to identify the empowerment programmes available to women,
political issues Contained in adult literacy programmes for women factors
motivating women’s participation in adult literacy programmes, ascertain the
impact o adult literacy programme on political participation of women and
determine the ways women have been empowered politically in Anambra State. The
study covered the six education zones in Anambra State which are Aguata zone
Awka zone Ogidi zone Nnewi zone Onitsha zone and Otuocha zone. Five null
hypothesis were tested at 0.05 level of significance and were used to guide the
study. The design adopted in carrying out the research was descriptive survey
and the instrument used was structured questionnaire. The population of the
study was 636. The sample of the study was 250 respondents made up of adult
education facilitators and registered women in politics. Purposive sampling
technique was used to select the 30 adult facilitators and 220 women in
politics which gave a total sample of 250 representing 39.18% of the total
population. Face validity of the instrument was established by three experts to
ensure item adequacy measurability and relevance of the instrument to the
study. The research questions were answered sinning mean and standard deviation
while t-test statistics was used to test the hypothesis at a significance level
of 0.95 while data computation was done with SPSS 20.0. The findings show that
increasing women’s empowerment in leadership and decision –making has proven to
be good for economic and social development in Anambra State. It was also found
out that longer exposure to women’s political representation increases women’s overall labour force
participation , the share of public employment opportunities allocated to
women, and women’s access to public amenities such as roads and health services
in Anambra State Nigeria.
