ABSTRACT
The study was conducted to investigate innovative
administrative measures of principals for enhancing teachers’ instructional
effectiveness in secondary schools in Abia State. The study was guided by five
research questions and five corresponding hypotheses. The study adopted
descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 3,843
comprising 3602 teachers and 241 principals in public senior secondary schools
in Abia State. The sample ofthe study was 351 comprising 276 teachers and 75
principals obtained using proportionate stratified sampling technique. A structured
questionnaire was developed by the researcher titled; Principals’ Innovative
Administrative Measures Questionnaire (PIAMQ) and validated by three experts.
The internal consistency of the instrument was obtained using Cronbach alpha
(d) statistic that yielded an index of 0.87. The data collected was analyzed
using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while t-test
was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings
indicated that to a high extent principals employed participatory decision
making, mentoring, incentive and staff appraisal measures as well as provision
oflearning materials for enhancing teachers’ instructional effectiveness in
senior secondary schools. Based on the findings, it was recommended that:
School management should ensure that teachers and other stakeholders are
involved in the decision-making process forthe progress and growth ofthe
institution.
