ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to assessed the
effectiveness of micro-teaching programme for enhancing biology trainee
teachers’ instructional delivery skills in tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom
State. The study was guided by six research questions and six corresponding
null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The
study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study
was 144 comprising 98 final year Biology education students and 46 Science
education lecturers of Faculty of Education University of Uyo and Akwa Ibom
State College of Education. The entire population of 144 comprising 98 final
year Biology education students and 46 Science education lecturers was adopted
using census technique. The instrument for data collection was a structured
questionnaire developed by the researcher and validated by three experts from
College of Education, Michael Okpara University ofAgriculture, Umudike. The
reliability ofthe instrument was 0.76 obtained using Cronbach’s Alpha
statistic. The data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation
to answer the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using
t-test statistic. The results of the data analyses revealed that: To a high
extent micro-teaching programme enhance Biology trainee teachers’ instructional
planning, classroom management, use of instructional materials, use of
instructional methods/strategies and evaluation skills in tertiary institutions
in Akwa Ibom State. Also, the challenges facing the effectiveness of
micro-teaching programme in tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom State include:
poor funding of teacher education programme, poor implementation of biology
trainee teachers’ education policies, strike actions consistently embark by academic
unions affect teacher education programme, inadequate provision of
instructional devices for equipping the biology education trainee teachers,
poor teaching and learning environment among others. Based on the findings, it
was recommended that: There is need to ensure that Biology trainee teachers’
are adequately expose to micro-teaching and guided properly to enable them
acquire relevant instructional skills to a very high extent so as to boost
their confidence as professional train teachers in tertiary institutions in
Akwa Ibom State.
