ABSTRACT
This research work focused on the role of human capital
development in revitalization and sustainability of an organization with
particular reference to Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) Umuahia
Branch which is about two years. The objectives of the study include: the
determination of factors affecting human capital development in an organization
particularly the EEDC, Umuahia, to examine the effects of qualified and skilled
manpower on general organizational performance. To identify the effect of on
the job training on the performance of human capital in an organization, to
examine the impact of management development programmes on human capital
readiness for managerial function and to identify' the impact of coaching,
mentoring and understudying on the performance of its human resources. To
achieve these objectives, the researcher employed both primary and secondary
methods of data collection. Structured questionnaires were distributed to 154
respondents where 120 were properly filled and returned. The hypotheses were
tested with the use of chi square statistical instrument at 0.05 level of
significant. The findings revealed that management development programmes have
created an avenue in EEDC Umuahia branch to meet their manpower needs, on the
job training and coaching, mentoring, understudying helps EEDC Umuahia Branch
to be more effective and efficient in their operations. The findings also
revealed that human capital development programmes have increased the manpower
necessary skill, knowledge and altitude needed to be effective and efficient t
work place. Time and cost has been identified as some of the factors affecting
human capital development in EEDC, Umuahia. However. recommendations were made
as follow; that there should be proper monitoring and follow up on the job
training to ensure the effectiveness of the programme and to achieve the objectives.
A systematic training and development should be embarked upon by organizations,
corporate bodies and ministries in Nigeria, knowing the present manpower
resources help to plan very well for the future, therefore, manpower
environment should be taken into consideration because of expected changes such
as technological changes etc.
