Impact Of Committee System On The Performance Of Nigerian Universities. A Study Of Committee System In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State
ABSTRACT
The study investigated the impact of committee system on the
performance of University administration. It specifically sought to determine
if committee system improves staff participation in the administration of
MOUAU, ascertain the effect of committee system on the decision making process
of MOUAU, evaluate the problems of the committee system in university
administration and examine the impact of the committee system on the
performance of administration of MOUAU. This study was conducted using a well
structured questionnaire and data was collected from a sample of 569 to
evaluate the impact of committee system on the performance of University
Administration. The techniques used in analyzing the data for this research
work were the simple percentage, likert scale and the student's t-test (paired
sample test). The following findings were made: The committee system has
significantly improved staff participation in the administration in MOUAU. The
committee system does improve decisionmaking process in MOUAU, and has a
significant impact on the effective administration of MOUAU. Based on the
findings the following recommendations were made: The number of meetings in a
year should be streamlined downward to reduce work over load to members and
also reduce the high cost of financing these committees. Committees' decision
should not just be regarded as mere advisory, which can be treated anyhow.
Staff members appointed to serve in committees should be men or women of proven
integrity and sound knowledge of the subject mutters and also in order to
increase staff participation more adhoc committees should be created by
management.
