ABSTRACT

During the early period of industrial revolution, traditional management concept was more pronounced when the entrepreneurs regarded their employees as part of their tools to accomplish their objectives. This attitude led to employees resentment of factory conditions and meager wages, while employees fought back with threats, dismissals and other forms of punishments. However, the growth in size and the complex nature of present day organization as well as the separation of ownership from management have together with other environmental pressure for change, necessitated a shift of emphasis from traditional to a modem concept (personal minded concept) which takes the employees and their individual needs into consideration. The development led to the introduction of management by objective (MBO) through widely written and spoken about. Is yet to find its frill place in Nigerian business, management in terms of its effect. This study therefore is aimed at researching into the effect of the concept in our business management with a focus on employees job satisfaction. Management by objective (MBO) is a process by which mangers and their subordinates participate jointly in setting goals, activities and target dates as well as evaluation of performances as it relates to established objectives. In pursuance of this study the researcher has conducted detailed survey on the subject and has consequently presented the study in five chapters. In conducting the research, sample of 244 respondents (managers and staff of the case study organization) were interviewed using questionnaires and oral interview. These respondents were selected using a random sample technique. 'Data obtained were analyzed using simple percentage method and tables. And as well hypothesis was tested with the Chi-square technique. Unilever plc in Abia State was used as a case study. The findings of the research study shows that the participation employees in the organization improves productivity and satisfy employees in the organization, the recommendation of the study are geared towards, making cleave corporate objective and plans should always be set, and subordinates plans leading to the achievement of the corporate objectives should also be clearly made along the key result areas existing in the organization.
