Abstract
This study was carried out to detennine staff
perception on causes of low productivity in the Nigerian private sector (A
study of valleumbra flour mills).The problems are, poor production planning and
control, poor working condition, low morale of workers. To accomplish the
objectives of the study which are, to ascertain if poor production planning and
control affect productivity, to know if working condition significantly lead to
low productivity, to examine if inadequate skills of the worker due to lack of
training results to low productivity, to know the role of poor quality ofraw
materials in low productivity, to make recommendations based on findings. Data
were collected from a sample of 75 respondents out of a population of one
hundred in the study area through the use of questionnaires. Chi-square was
used to determine, the impact of poor production planning and control, the
effect of inadequate working condition, to know the effect of inadequate
working condition, to determine the effect ofinadequate skills ofthe worker. To
that effect so many variables were identified to be the causes of low
productivity. In this regard recommendations were made for management to give
proper attention to production planning and control, working condition of the
workers and man power training and development The findings revealed that poor
production planning and control leads to low productivity, inadequate working
condition also leads to low productivity, and inadequate skills ofthe worker
due to lack oftraining also result to low productivity
