ABSTRACT
The study Teachers’ professional Development programme and teachers effectiveness in Public Secondary Schools in Abia state adopted a descriptive survey design. Four research questions and four null hypotheses guided the study. The study population was 3970 respondents which consist of 3735 teachers and 235 principals. A sample size of 769 was drawn using proportionate stratified random sampling technique to represent 10% of the population. A researchers self-development questionnaire titled ‘’Teacher professional Development programme and Teacher Effectiveness Questionnaire (TPDPTEQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by two experts in the Department of Educational Management and Planning and one expert from the Department of Science Education (Measurement and Evaluation) all from the College of Education, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. Cronbach Alpha statistics was used to determine the reliability of the instrument which yielded a reliability index of 0.82. Data collected were analyzed using Mean and Standard Deviation to answer the research questions and t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance respectively. The result of the study revealed that the teachers are of the opinion that On-the-job training influence teachers effectiveness based on the pooled mean of 3.17 which exceeded the mean bench mark of 2.50. It also revealed that there is no significant difference on the mean response of principals’ and teachers on the influence of off-the-job training and teachers’ effectiveness. This was evidenced in the t-cal. value of 2.05> p-value of 0.04. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made along which are; Government as well as her agencies and school proprietors should organize regular seminars, conferences or workshop to all the teachers in each academic session irrespective of class and subject handled by the teachers to ensure teachers effectiveness. Government should also grant teachers in-service training leave with pay in other to motivate them thus improves the standard of education in the system.
