ABSTRACT 

The word composition may mean different things in different circumstances. It could be a personal narrative, a short work of fiction or prose, an essay, a dramatic work or a poem. Composition is a complex activity that incorporates thought processes, feelings, and social interactions. It is also an act of creatively and imaginatively putting down ideas, feelings and opinions using the correct words. Penn (2007) added that it can be a satisfying and mind-expanding activity to those who have acquired the necessary skills but a frustrating and even aversive experience when the skills are lacking. Each of the works of composition has its set of rules. The rules of composition include (but not limited to grammatical rules, tenses, number comparison; Lexis- the use of dictionary, idioms, collocation and the levels of usage; and Syntax: sentence variety: simple, complex and compound; clause: noun clause, adverbial clause and relative clause. Others include Phrase and stylistic problems- wordiness, punctuation marks, types of paragraph and paragraph development, definition and types and hints on essay writing (Oyinloye & Gbenedio, 2010). The students should know, retain and recall these rules for effective English language composition writing. It appears, however, that students have been found wanting in this regard.
