Determination Of Some Engineering Properties O Soil In Some Selected Area In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike.
ABSTRACT
A research was conducted in Michael Okpara
University of Agriculture Umudike to determine some engineering properties of
soil in its activity areas. The engineering properties of soil as determined in
the university activity area were, the moisture content, bulk density, void ratio, porosity, liquid limit, plastic limit
and shear strength. The moisture content was determined using the oven dry
method at 105°, the bulk density was determined using the core cutter, the
liquid and plastic limit with the cassagrandes apparatus and the shear strength
using the penetrometer. The results show that the soil has average moisture
content of 15.6%, 16.8% and 19.29% at the 0cm, 10cm and 20cm depths
respectively. The porosity was determined to be 54.1%, the average bulk
density, l.44g/cm3. The void ratio was determined as 1.18, while the liquid
limit, average plastic limit and shear strength were 32.5%, 28.4% and 2737.
5kpa respectively. Based on the result obtained, the test was recommended to be
carried out in every part of the university and even in the National Root Crop
Research Institute Umudike to aid site selection for farm practice.
