ABSTRACT

 Hexagonal Evaporative cooler was designed, constructed and tested using locally available materials. This was used in the preservation of freshly harvested Vegetables. The capacity of1 the cooler was 0.135m3 Two tests including "No Loud Test" and “Load Test" were carried out on the cooler. The "No Load Test” was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the pad materials (jute, wood shavings and latex foam) used. While the “Load Test” was carried out during preservation of Vegetables with Jute pad material. Freshly harvested Okra (Hibiscus esculentus), Amaranthus (Amaranthus spp) and Tomato. The maximum temperature drop of the cooler was 12.5°C. The minimum and maximum dry bulb temperatures of the cooler were 18.3 and 25°C. Jute pad was .observed to have the highest saturation efficiency of 97% and humidTfication efficiency of 91.2%,and latex foam 80.5% and humidification efficiency of 67.4%.The cooler was able to sustain the weight and freshness of okra and amaranthus for 28 days. It was • also found that the cooler was not suitable for the storage of ripe tomato.
