ABSTRACT
This study was designed to appraise the implementation of the Senior Secondary Geography curriculum in Abia State Senior Secondary School System. The evaluation model used was the Shuffle beam (1971), CIPP. Seven (7) research questions were posed and seven (7) research hypotheses formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The content scope was on the overview and scope of Geography curriculum, teaching methods in Geography, gender as a variable on the part of teachers, years of teaching experience of Geography teachers, the teacher's academic qualification, use of adequate learning resources and the performance of Geography students. The population of the study were three thousand, five hundred and thirty (3,530) Geography students and One hundred and forty nine (149) Geography teachers. The sample size is seven hundred and six (706) Geography students and thirty (30) Geography teachers. To aid the study, random sampling technique by replacement was used. One structured questionnaire was used by the researcher. Instrument was validated by test rest techniques. The data were collected by the researcher and three research assistants. The data were analysed using weighted mean. The study revealed that Geography curriculum content is not effectively covered. Geography teachers appropriately use teaching methods, gender of the Geography teachers also affected the teaching of Geography, the teaching experience of the Geography teachers contributed positively in Geography teaching, unprofessional teachers contribute to a low extent. Also, there were available learning materials for teaching and the academic performances of the students were good in practical than theoretical. Recommendations include content coverage should be ensured, proper teaching methods should be used, proper teaching materials should be used, male and female should employed to teach Geography, years of teaching experience should not be less than five years, unprofessional teachers should not be employed to teach, more learning materials should be provided and more emphasis should be placed on the academic performance of students.
