ABSTRACT
The study was carried out on the nutritional status of one
hundred top civil servants and businessmen in Umuahia metropolis using
anthropometric and blood cholesterol level. Food habit was determined by
structured questionnaires. Results indicated that more than 65% of the subjects
consumed high cholesterol rating diets such as cow milk, butter, pork, eggs
cheese, sandwich, fried meat etc. and they were also consumer of alcoholic
beverages. About 50% of the subjects were overweight and some in grade 1
obesity. Similarly, more than 50% of the subjects had higher than normal cholesterol
value (> - 150 — 250mg/l00m/blood) while about the same percentage had
higher than normal low density lipoproteins (LDL), thus predisposing these
subjects to cardiovascular diseases. Positive change in dietary habits and life
style is advocated for better health.
