Assessing Nutrient Intake And Nutritional Status Of The Elderly Living In Ikot Ekpene L.G.A
ABSTRACT
Ageing is the process of growing
old. It is the changes that occur as a result of passing of time (Hornby,
1990). East wood (1997) specifically described it as the regression of
physiological functions accompanied by advancing age. Categorically it is the period
between 60 years — 80 years for the elderly and 100 and above for the aged.
Growing old necessitate changes in lifestyle. The elderly are identified from
amongst others as people that have retired from normal active service. Some
move to their homes in the rural areas and most often suffer chronic illness
which makes them to depend so much on others. Change (1998) noted that some
elderly live with their spouse, some are widowed while most live alone,
apparently because their children and relative reside in towns and cities far
from home in such case there is no one to plan, prepared and ensure that
adequate meals are eaten. They may ignorantly eat foods that they should
otherwise avoid because of the changing health conditions or even not get
enough nutrients and this developed one sickness for the other.
