ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to identify
improvement strategies for enhancing effective teaching and learning of
agriculture in senior secondary schools in Ukwa East Local Government Area of
Abia State. The study was supported by four research questions and four
hypotheses. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The
population of this study was 220 which comprises of 18 teachers of agriculture
and 202 students in senior secondary schools in Ukwa East Local Government
Area. The entire population of the study was adopted for the study since the
researcher was able to handle. The instrument for data collection was the
researcher designed questionnaire titled "Strategies for Enhancing
Teaching of Agriculture Questionnaire (SETAO)". The reliability of the
instrument · 1as 0. 74 which was derived using the Cronbach's Alpha Statistic
after a trial test was carried ouu. The data for the study was collected
through the administration of 220 copies of the questionnaire to respondents of
which all the 220 copies were retrieved completely filled representing 100%
return rate. The data collected were analyses using mean and Mandard deviations
co the answer the four research questions while the null hypotheses was tested
ming t-test statistic. The results of the analyses revealed that: Well equip
agricultural laboratory enhance effective teaching and learning of agriculture
in senior secondary schools, provision of adequate classroom instructional
facilities enhances effective teaching and learning of agriculture in senior
secondary schools, teacher retraining enhances effective teaching and learning
of agriculture in senior secondary schools and regular instructional
supervision enhance effective teaching and learning of agriculture in senior secondary
schools. Based on these findings, it was recommended that: the government of
Abia State should endeavour to provide schools with wellequipped agricultural
laboratory that will facilitate the improvement ir teaching and learning of
agriculture which will enable students to acquire saleable agricultural skills
needed for sustainable livelihood.
