An Evaluation Of The Infrastructural Facilities, And Technical/Lerning Materials In Abia State Public Primary Schools: Implications For The Ube :- U. N. Akanwa
Abstract
The study was conducted to find
out the infrastructural facilities and teaching/learning materials available
for a smooth implementation of UBE in Abia State. The sample comprised 50
primary schools from two out of the three senatorial zones of Abia State. To
carry out the study six research question were formulated. Ten-item, open ended
questionnaire was administered to the head teachers and responses analyzed
using proportions. Records were got from the statistics unit of the State
Primary Education Board (SPEB). Direct observations by the researchers were
also used to obtain first hand information. It was observed that there had been
reduction in the enrolment figures from 1998/99 sessions to 2000/200 I probably
due to poor infrastructural facilities. Responses from the questionnaire showed
that Federal, State and Local Government are yet to start effective provision
of the infrastructural facilities or improving the available ones. The
facilities on ground were found to be mostly inappropriate in quantity, size,
and quality. Recommendation made include a suggestion for improvement to avoid
a repeat of UPE of 1976 experience.
