Abstract

The study employed descriptive survey design to investigate assessment of strategies of ohyir che physics teachers in senior «dary schools; way orwar n pnysics ac 1evement A sample of 150(78males, 72females) it ,F 1 . s,w I h . d . U . , 'l' 'I ou» oj a population of 544 senior secondary school physics stu ents in Iuahia North Local Government Area (LGA) of Umuahia Education Zone of Abia StatE was_got by simple random technique. Two resean.-/i qu~rans and one null hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. The instrument used for data collection was researchers developed four point Likert type questionnaire. The instrument was validated and its reliability obtained as 0.89 using Cronbach Alpha. Data were analyzed using mean to answer the research questions and t test statistics for the hypothesis. Result showed that teacher competence like formulating and adopting good teaching lesson plans, relating new lesson with previous lesson skills and teachers preparation of appropriate and valid assessment tools like assessing students learning with proper evaluation tools, informing students of their performance and improvement, recording and proper computation of students skills among others are strategies the physics teacher can use to improve students achievement in physics. Based on the findings recommendations were made to include physics teachers carrying their students along by giving them feedback on their performances among others.
