ABSTRACT

The study investigates the impact ofmotivationalprogrammes onproductivity in private sector (A study selectedfastfoodfirms Umuahia, Abia State). The specific objectives were to: identify the motivational programmes adopted by fast food firms in Umuahia; identify problem hindering the success of the employees’ motivation; determine the factors that increase motivation of employees and examine relationship between employees ’ motivation and productivity in fast food firms in Umuahia. Primary data sourced from distribution of questionnaires to 140 staffofselectedfastfoodfirms Umuahia, Abia State were usedfor the study. 124 questionnaires were recoupedfrom the respondents which is used as the sample size. A test-re-test was conducted to ensure validity and reliability ofthe data. The data were presented using 5point likert scale; simple frequency and percentage. The hypotheses were tested using C hi-square statistical model, simple regression model and correlation coefficient. The result reveal that majority of the respondents 17.82%, 11.39% 11.39%, 10.89% and 10.40% posited that capacity training and development, performance appraisal, recognition, welfare packages and bonus respectively are motivational programmes exhibited by the management ofthe organization to the staff. 22.58% of the respondents who comments that leadership/management style is a significant factors which hindering the success of the employees' motivation. Majority ofthe respondents (27.41%>) marked increase in employee performance as the main factor which increases motivation of employees; 44.35%> of the respondents ’ state's that motivational programmes affect employee performance to a very large extent. Majority ofthe respondents’ rate the relationship between employee motivation and productivity in fast foodfirms positive with 73.39°%, motivation of employees promotes organizational performance. The empirical result shows that motivational programmes adopted byfastfood in Umuahia hassignificant influence onproductivity. In addition, problem (organizational policy, total output, leadership/management style, absenteeism/noncommitment and corruption) hindering the success ofthe employees’ motivation has significant influence on productivity. More so, increase in motivationalprogramme have significant effect on employee performance in Fastfoodfirms in Umuahia, Abia State. Finally, the correlation result shows that there is positive relationship between employees motivation andproductivity in Fastfoodfirms in Umuahia. It was recommended that the management and decision makers in the organization should endeavour to review motivational packages at various levels in order to earn employees ’ satisfaction andpromote high labour turnover among the members ofstaffin the organization.
