ABSTRACT

The study examined the determinants of employment and income among

one hundred and twenty agiibusincss households in Abia State. The

agribusiness households in the state as noted operates in environment

characterized by low output, low productivity, low income and employment

and are at subsistence level, it is based on the above fact that this study was

conducted. The importance of studying the determinants of employment and

income of agribusiness households in the state did not only help us to

examine the existing income levels but also enabled us to estimate the

determinants of employment and income of agribusiness household in the

state. Data for this were collected using structured questionnaire and were

also analyzed using descriptive statistics, ordinary least square regression

and probit regression. Results from the analysis revealed that agribusiness

household employment and income i' Abia State are mostly a business of

the males. The result also revealed that agribusiness employment and

income is largely influenced by the level of education. An econometric

analysis of related data unveils diffcre1it factors which influence agribusiness

household employment aiid income. In ciuphymciits and income, education,

education squared, age, gender, distance, landholding and value livestock

were significant variablQ that influenced employment and income.

Employment was seen to exist in the form of self employment and wage

employment. In view of this, I tI1erEiforc recommend that the government

individuals and corporate bodies should consider these variables in

designing strategies aimed at improving the employment and income of

agribusiness households in the state.
