ABSTRACT
The study was
carried out to investigate the utilization of information and communication
technology for instructional delivery in adult education programme in Abia
State, Nigeria. The study was guided by five specific objectives from where the
research question and hypothesis were formulated respectively. The study
adopted the Descriptive Survey Design. The population of the study was 3,287
which comprised 2,629 Adult learners, 214 Staff of the agency and 444
facilitators across 204 adult education centres from the Seventeen (17) Local
Government Areas (L.G.As) of the three Education Zones that made up Abia State.
The sample of the study was 400 respondents which comprised of 320 adult
learners, 26 Staff of the Agency and 54 facilitators selected through the multistage
sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was the “Utilization of
ICT for Instructional Delivery on Adult Education Programme questionnaire (UIIDAEPQ). The instrument was validated by
three experts made up of two from the Department of Adult Education and one
from the Department of Science Education (Measurement and Evaluation) Michael
Okpara University of Agriculture. The overall reliability coefficient of the
instrument was 0.896 and was determined using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation
Coefficient (PPMCC) statistic after a test retest was carried out. The data for
the study was collected through the administration of 400 Copies of the
“Utilization of ICT for Instructional Delivery in Adult Education Programme
Questionnaire”. The study was guided by five objectives. Based on the five
objectives, five research questions were posed for the study and five null
hypotheses were also tested at 0.05 level of significance. The research
questions were answered using mean and standard deviations, while the Analysis
Of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the 5 null hypotheses at 0.05 level of
significance. Findings of the study revealed that the ICT tools such as Printed
materials, Projection devices, and radio, were available to a high extent, as
the Printed materials to a high extent was utilised, while the Sound recording
and radio, Film and video, Social communication tools(like face book, you tube),Computer
and internet access software were to a low extent. Based on the findings, the
study recommends that The adult literacy
education centres and government should ensure that other information and
communication technology materials such as
Printed materials, Projection devices, Sound recording and radio, Film
and video, Social communication tools{like face book, you tube),Computer and
internet assess software should be adequately provided and utilised to a high
extent. The Adult literacy education centres and government should organize
workshops for the retraining of facilitators on the skills and competencies
required for effective utilization of information and communication technology
materials in the teaching and learning of adult learners.
