Studies On The Toxic Effects Of Diazinon On The Haematologjal Characteristics Of Heterobranchus Bidorsalis (Male) X Clarias Gariepinus (Female) Hybrid
ABSTRACT
Heteroclarias, hybrid of the African freshwater catfish (Heterobranchus
bidorsalis. Male X Clarias gariepinus; female with mean weights of 82.8 + 0.5g
and mean total lengths of 23. 4± 0.2 cm respectively were exposed to 0, 20, 40,
60 and 80 ppm of diazinon. This was carried out by a gravimetric toxicant autodelivery
method in a continuous-flow through system for 96 hrs. The median lethal
concentration of diazinon to "Heteroclarias" was 19.95 ppm with upper
and lower limits of toxicity being 35.51 and 11.22 ppm. The experimental fish
showed several abnormal behaviors which included restlessness, arena movement, and
loss of equilibrium, increased opecular activities, strong spasm, sudden quick
movement, paralysis and finally, death. For the haernatological studies
"Heteroc!arias" of the same morphometric measurement as the former
from same stock were exposed for 28 days to sublethal concentrations of 0. 2.5,
5.0, 7.5 and 10.00 ppm of diazinon. There was a significant decrease (P <
0.05) in packed cell volume (PCV), Haemoglobin concentration (Hbc), Red Blood
Cell Count (RBCC), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). The White
Blood Cell Count (WBCC) inàreased spontaneously at week one but decreased significantly
(P < 0.05) as the experiment progressed indicating immediate response to
stress condition and later fOUowed by fall in values. The finding of this
research showed that Heteroclarias is susceptible to diazinon pesticide
resulting in lysis of RBc, anaemia, and leucophilia on exposure to sublethal
levels of diazinon.
