ABSTRACT
The production of maggot through the use of pig manure, layer and broiler droppings was carried out at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike rubber plantation. The study was carried out to determine and compare the maggot production capability of three animal wastes (pig dung, layers droppings and broilers droppings). The study also determined phosphorus, L carbon and nitrogen changes during the production of maggot. Two kilograms of each moist manure were put into a sack in three (3) replicates and exposed to houseflies for 5 hours under conducive conditions. The houseflies petched on the manures and laid eggs. The egg hatched in 12 hours time. The manures were taken for analysis to determine the phosphorus, carbon and nitrogen content of the manure at three days interval. The maggots were harvested on the 9h day of experiment. There were significant differences (P <0.0001) between pig, layer and broiler droppings in maggot harvest weight. The study showed that the quantity of maggot produced was highest in the broiler droppings, followed by the layer droppings and by pig droppings (p<O.05). Also layers dropping has higher carbon nitrogen ratio due to low carbon content.
