ABSTRACT
Rapid Industrialization has led to an increase in industrial (alit discharge into inland and marine waters. The discharge of effluents into bodies is hazardous to organisms in the receiving aquatic environment and organisms that come in contact directly or Most of these industrial wastes are rich in nutrients that serve as growth suhstraie for microorganisms thuaquatic environment. The effluent from paper recycling contain a lot of starch. sugars an(J ligniocel Itiloses' vhicIi support the growth of bacteria. riiolds arid sonic \ casts. (Niemela et at.. 1983: Ezeronye and Amogu. I 998). The main pollutants generated in the pulp and paper industry include sulphite. free chlorine. hypochlorite. caustic soda (NaOl I) and phenols. These pollutants iii addition to encouraging iliiCiol)ial growth affect the availability of water fr public atei supply. fisheries. wild! i ft' arid also aficts lie aesthetic quality of' I lie wafer. Cellulolvtic bacteria such as K/c/is/ella /meumoniac' and lMk'IoI)a(k'F .p/, have been isolated troni the paper and pulp industry effluent (I (cry (If.. I 9(8 I zeronyc and Amogu I 998).
