Incidence Of Hiv Infection In Adults Who Attended Federal Medical Center, Umuahia From 1999-2003.
ABSTRACT
Records of 14,523 patients who went for HIV screening from Januaiy,1999 to December, 2003, at Federal medical center, Umuahia were examined and reported, taking into consideration their HIV status, sex, age, and pregnancy status. Data were available on 3068 men, 7238 non-pregnant women and 4217 pregnant women. Overall, incidence of HIV infection from 1999-2003 was 11.4%. In 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2003 HIV incidence rates were 11.6%; 10.6%; 12.0% and 11.4% respectively. HIV incidence rate for males, all females, pregnant females, and non-pregnant females was 18.7%, 9.5%, 5.9%, and 11.5% respectively. Percentage reported as HIV positive for males (18.7%) is twice those of females (9.5%), giving a female/male ratio of 1:2. There was a significantly higher risk of infection in men than in women. HIV incidence rate in both males and females increased in lower age group and decreases in higher age group.15-19 (16.8%), 20-24 (12.4%), 25-29 (10.4%), 30-34 (7.5%), and 35-49 (6.9%). Umuahia's HIV epidemic is increasing predominantly and most rapidly among males but tends to be lower among pregnant and non- pregnant women. The overall results show that the infection rate is higher in younger population than in the older population.
