ABSTRACT
The
study focused on the production of non- adhesive household cleaners and polish
using coconut oil (Cocus Nuciferia), rough lemon (Citrus Limonium), ginger
(Zingiber Officinale) and other local materials. The aim was to address
affordability ofthese materials at low cost.Experimental design and survey was
used. This research was carried out in Omoku, Rivers State, Nigeria. A total
population of 182 working mothers and housekeepers was used. The sampling
technique used was stratified random sampling with a sample size of one hundred
and forty two (142),102 working mothers and 40Housekeepers. A nine point
hedonic scale questionnaire was constructed for data collection. The major
analytical tool used in analyzing the collected data was descriptive
statistical mean rating and z-test which were used to analyze the six (6)
hypotheses using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version
17.0, the study had nine (9) research question and nine(9) purpose of study.
The findings revealed among many others that there is no significant difference
between the mean rating of respondents on how locally produced toilet cleaner
is acceptable in terms of quality, there is no significant difference between
the 'mean rating of respondents on how locally produced polish is acceptable in
terms of quality, there is no significant difference between the mean rating
ofrespondents on how locally produced household cleaners differs from
commercially marketed ones, there is a significant difference between the mean
rating of respondents on how locally produced floor wash are acceptable in
terms of colour, there is no significant difference between the mean rating of
respondents on how locally produced liquid soap are acceptable in terms of
odour and there is no significant difference between the mean rating of
respondents on how locally produced abrasives are acceptable in terms of
quality. It was recommended that government should provide the enabling environment
for small and medium enterprises to thrive and enable them access loan for
procurement of appropriate equipment used in the production of household
cleaners and polish so as to improve their quality, colour, odour and
acceptability.
