Prevalence Of Fungi-Associated With Spoilt Tomatoes In Aba Markets, Abia State, Nigeria:- Nwachukwu, Precious C
ABSTRACT
Tomato contains large amount ofwater
which makes it more susceptible to spoilage by fungi. These fungi that spoil
tomatoes produce mycotoxins that are detrimental to human health. This study
was therefore carried out to isolate, characterize and identify the fungi
associated with the spoilage of tomato fruits sold in Ahia ohuru, Ariria
international market, Umungasi, Afule and Ahia nkwo, markets in aba in Abia
state. While the fungal isolates were Aspergillus niger, Fusarium species,
Aspergillusflavus andPenicillum species. The percentage occurrence ofthe
isolates in the fruits from Ahia ohuru was the highest ( 32%) while that of the
fruits from umungasi was the lowe'st(12%). Aspergillus niger had the highest
(52%) in the fruits studied; Penicillium having the lowest percentage
occurrence (8%) The same prevalence rate (100%) was recorded for all tomato
samples purchased in all locations. Proper handling and adequate storage
facilities must therefore be employed to prolong the shelflife oftomato fruits.
