ABSTRACT v This research was undertaken to examine the effect of ethyl acetate root extract of Sphenocentrumjollyanum on some serum electrolytes of diabetic induced wistar albino rats. The root extract at doses of 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg was administered orally to the rats by gavage. A total of twenty (20) rats were divided into five groups, Group A as the normal Control, group B which was treated with extract (Low dose: 200mg/Kg bodyweight), group C which was Standard drug treated (5mg/Kg bodyweight), group D which was treated with extract (High dose: 400mg/Kg bodyweight) and group E which served as the negative control (untreated). The serum electrolytes (Na+, K+, Cl- and HCO3-) were also estimated after the experiment. There was a significant (p<0.05) difference in the Na+ levels in the groups given 200mg/kg extract and 400mg/kg extract was compared with the normal but there was no significant (P>0.05) difference when positive control (std control) was compared with the normal. Likewise, there was a significant difference in the K+ level when the groups given 200mg/kg extract, 400mg/kg extract and positive control was compared with the normal. Also, there was a significant difference in the Cl' level when the group given 200mg/kg extract and positive control was compared with the normal. Finally, there was a significant difference in the HCO3 level when 200mg/kg extract, 400mg/kg extract and positive control groups were compared with the normal. From the result of this experiment, it is concluded that the ethyl acetate root extract of Sphenocentrum jollyanum showed significant hypoglycemic activity and beneficial effects on some serum electrolytes in alloxan induced diabetic rats.
