ABSTRACT viii Diabetes mellitus is a serious and complex chronic condition that is characterized by hyperglycemia. Mucuna prurienspruriens is used in herbal medicine for the treatment of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart related diseases. This work was designed to ascertain the effects of methanol extract of Mucuna prurienspruriens on selected haematological parameters. Glibenclamide was used as reference/ standard drug. Twentyfive (25) female rats weighing between 120-150g were completely randomized into five (5) groups. Group 1 rats (normal control), 2 (negative control), 3 (positive control. Group 4 (50 mg/kg body wt. of extract) and 5 (100 mg/kg body wt). In the present study the FBS of diabetic untreated rats (Group 2) was significantly (P<0.005) increased when compared to normal control group. The animals treated with glibenclamide, 50 and lOOmg/Kg body weight of extract showed significant decrease (P<0.05) of blood sugar level compared to the untreated rats (group 2). This suggests that the plant extract possesses anti-diabetic or hypoglycemic effect. A significant (p<0.05) decrease was observed in the haemoglobin and PCV levels of untreated diabetic animals (negative control) and a significant (p<0.05) increase in the experimental groups treated with standard drug, 50mg/Kg body wt. of Mucunaprurienspruriens and lOOmg/Kg body wt. Mucuna prurienspruriens when compared with negative control. The results of the RBC and WBC showed a significant (p<0.05) decreased in RBC was observed in untreated group (negative control) when compared with normal control. And a significant (p<0.05) increased in RBC and WBC level was observed in group treated with extract of 100 mg/kg of the extract when compare to the diabetic group untreated group (negative control). MCH test revealed a significant (p<0.05) increased was observed in untreated group (Negative control), group treated with 50 mg/kg of extract and 100 mg/kg of extract after inducing alloxan when compared with normal control. And a significant (p<0.05) increased in MCH and MCV were observed in group treated with extract of 100 mg/kg of extract when compared to the diabetic group treated with negative group. MCHC level had no significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in all group. This implies that methanol extracts of Mucuna prurienspruriens is of great importance in the treatment of hyperglycemia. Also methanol extract of Mucuna prurienspruriens may be used as a medicinal friendly plant in anemic managements.
