ABSTRACT
This is research
project titled: "Motivation as a tool for improving, employee performance:
a study of Emenite Nigeria Ltd., Enugu." The need for this research work
arose as a result of inadequate staff motivation of most public sector
organization, with some undesirable work behaviour like, lateness, truancy,
absenteeism, indiscipline and general low productivity. The researcher
developed four research questions which formed the basis of the questionnaire
construction. A related literature on the subject was reviewed, the researcher
used both primary and secondary sources of data collection with structured
questionnaire as the major instrument used. The simple random sampling
technique was used to select the sample size for the study whereas the data
collection were presented and analyzed with frequencies, percentages and
tables. The study reveals that the Emenite Nigeria Ltd., Enugu does not
adequately motivate their staff and that the effectiveness of the staff and
their general productivity were not encouraged. It was also, discovered that
training and development of staff, job security, promotion and medical assistance
for hospitalized staff were the only motivational packages in the organization.
The study also reveals that there was high level of staff turnover in the
organization as a result of unattractive nature of the job. Based on these
findings, the researcher recommended that the Emenite Nigeria Ltd., Enugu
vis-a-vis other public service organizations should embrace adequate motivation
for high productivity, the need for providing other motivational packages apart
from salaries, such as, regular training and retraining needs, job enrichment
and enlargement, workers participation recognition of achievement etc. the
researcher also recommended the need for redesigning of jobs to make the
organization objectives very clearly stated. They should work towards effective
and sustained staff motivation to enable workers to stay and change their
negative behaviour towards their work,
