ABSTRACT
The study
examined malaria prevalence in relation to blood group and haemoglobin
genotypes among new intake students of Federal Government College Ohafia. A
total of 200 randomly selected new intake students who gave their consent were
included in the study and examined using microscopy. Thick and thick blood
smears prepared on clean greased free slides from venous blood aseptically
collected from each students and stained with Giemsa stain were examined for
the presence of malaria parasite. The blood grouping and haemoglobin genotype
were done using ABO typing and haemoglobin electrophoresis respectively. Data
were analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version
20.0. Overall prevalence rate recorded for malaria was 48(24%). Blood group AB*
and O had the highest prevalence rate 2(100%). There was no Plasmodium detected
among the participants’ with blood group B~ and AB". Blood group O* had
the least prevalence rate 16(15.19%). There was statistical significant
difference among the different groups (X? = 19.911, P < 0.05). More male
students were infected 31(30.7%) than the female students 17(17.2%). Genotype
SS had the highest prevalence rate 8(42.1%) while genotype AS had the least
prevalent rate 13(17.1%). There was statistical difference between malaria
prevalence in relation to genotype (X? = 17.246, P < 0.05). The result of
this study shows that blood group AB* and O~ with genotype SS are more
susceptible to malaria than the other blood groups and genotypes. Apart from
focusing on pregnant women and children in the control of malaria, government
should consider other individuals of Hb — genotype SS and AA together with
blood group AB* and O" in the control of malaria.
