ABSTRACT

 The health and safety measures applied in fast food centers in Umuahia, Abia State was successfully evaluated. The health and ability to work is a very important aspect of workers and staff of any institution and in particular labour intensive ones like the hotel industry. Safety is mainly compromised by the operational conflict that exists between the need for safety and the inclination to defer it based on cost-benefit considerations. The objectives of the study are; to examine the causes of health and safety hazard in fast food industries in Abia State to establish whether there are policy guidelines relating to prevention of occupational accidents and to check whether legal requirements relating to safety at work are followed, to evaluate the level of awareness of the safety procedures by the staff and proprietors of fast food centers within Umuahia municipality, to establish preventive measures that are in place to prevent Occupational Accidents in hotels within Umuahia municipality.To achieve the objectives of the study, descriptive research design method was adopted. The researcher adopted primary data in getting the required information. The population of the study is made up of I 00 respondents while the sample size is made up of 80 after adopting taro Yamane formula. However, a total 80 questionnaire was administered to the respondents. In testing the objectives, simple descriptive statistics was used. The findings revealed that the major causes of health and safety hazard in fast food industries in Umuahia town, Abia State includes; inadequate safety education print resources, lack of Instructions, housekeeping and willful transgression, lack of monitoring and supervision, lack of proper procedure and wrong safety attitude. The researcher recommends that Fast food industries should ensure that they have set safety procedures and policies that govern the industry. That would help in the prevention of health and safety hazards in the industry
