ABSTRACT
In this study waste
animal bye product, cattle cud, was utilized for the production of biogas to
ascertain the effects of time and substrate properties on the biogas yield.
While the temperature and the pH properties of the substrate were held constant
at 45°C and 3.5 respectively, their effects after 28-day retention time were
studied. 1 litre capacity laboratory-sized anaerobic digestion system was used
for the biogas production while bOg of the sample was reconstuted with 100 ml
of distilled water. Apart from the biogas yield, the substrate (cattle cud) was
charactierized, before and after use. There was significant difference among
the characteristic properties (volatile matter, moisture content, conductivity,
pH, ash content, and carbon to nitrogen ratio) of the cattle cud. Total cumulative
yield of the biogas during the study period was 1074.3 cm3 . From the result,
week 3 had the highest weekly yield of 331.40 cm3while, the highest individual
daily yield was put on the 22nd day with a value of 52.80 cm3. The results
obtained could be applied at industrial scale for commercial production.
