ABSTRACT

In this work, a battery aided generator for electricity production was developed using the principle of electromagnetic induction. A 3000 rpm D.C motor, powered by a 100A/12V Battery transmits power to a 2kVA alternator. The rotating alternator generates alternating current (A.C) which powers the appliances. In the same vein, some current from the alternator finds its way back to the battery for re-charging via a charging device which converts the remnant A.C to D.C. The generator does not use any conventional fossil fuel for its operation. The system was designed to eliminate the problem ofpower failure and incessant outages from the grid electricity supply and its attendant high fuel cost, and reduce the effect of gaseous emission pollution to the environment. From the performance evaluation conducted on the machine, a design efficiency of 99.98% when fully loaded was obtained, with a power factor of 1. The 0.02% reduction in the effective efficiency ofthe system was attributed to heat losses generated by the appliances when loaded. The test run during the evaluation was done twice to ensure replicability in the efficiency ofthe machine.
