ABSTRACT
An investigation into the
structural properties of copper aluminium composite was done in this research.
Aluminium 16 Ingots and copper borings were utilized to develop stir cast
composites having 2, 4, 6. 8, 10 wt% of copper oxide. 12 specimens of small
engine connecting rod fabricated based on the ASTM requirements had aluminium
and copper oxide in varied compositions of 100% 80.93g) to 90% (72.84g) and 2%
(1.62g) to 10% (8.09g) respectively. Hardness and tensile properties evaluation
were used as basis to characterize the composites produced. The results show that
the reinforcement of copper in aluminium improves the impact resistance and at
10% copper reinforcement the composite proved to have the highest impact
resistance therefor making it the best and most suitable material among other
samples for high force loading applications. Comparing the ultimate tensile
strength of the composite at various percentage copper reinforcement it can be
seen that the samples showed better tensile strength with greater copper
reinforcement as against the tensile strength of samples with lower copper
percentage reinforcement. It can also be noticed that the breaking strength
improved with the increase in percentage copper reinforcement of which the
highest breaking point was 237.10/V/mm2. The results demonstrate the capacity of
copper borings to serve as a reliable cost effective and technically efficient
reinforcement material for the development of copper matrix composites.
