ABSTRACT
The corrosion inhibition of mild
steel using Aspilia Africana extract as an inhibitor in Tetraoxosulphate (vi)
acid, H2SO4and Hydrochloric acid, HC1 has been studied in relation to the
concentration of the inhibitor as well as temperature and time of exposure in
hours by gravimetric (weight loss) technique. The results show that the
corrosion rate decreases as the concentration of the inhibitor increases.
Inhibition efficiency of the inhibitor was found to increase with increase in
concentration of inhibitor. Value of the activation energy obtained for the
inhibited corrosion reaction of mild steel are greater than the uninhibited
corrosion reaction. Thermodynamic consideration revealed that adsorption of
Aspilia Africana extract on mild steel surface is not spontaneous. hence the
plant extract inhibitor of Aspilia Africana are mixed reaction of Physisorption
and chemisorptions mechanisms which corroborates the Langmuir and Temkin
adsorption isotherms. Also, it was found that the corrosion inhibition behaviour
of Aspilia Africaiia extract is greater in Tetraoxosulphate (VI) acid,
H2SO4than Hydrochloric acid, HC1. So, Aspilia Africana extract can be used as a
good inhibitor for preventing mild steel material from corrosion.
