ABSTRACT
This study investigated
the effect of team-based management on organizational performance: a study of
some selected deposit-money Banks in South East Nigeria. The specific
objectives were to ascertain the extent cohesive leadership system affect the market
share of the selected deposit-money banks in South East Nigeria, to determine
the degree role integration system affect the profitability of the selected deposit-money
banks in South East Nigeria, to evaluate the extent mutual communication
affects the revenue growth of the selected deposit-money banks in South East
Nigeria, to establish the relationship between team-based management system and
customer satisfaction of the selected deposit-money banks in South East Nigeria,
to examine the effect of collaboration on the effectiveness of the selected deposit-money
banks in South East Nigeria, to identify challenging factors affecting
team-based management system of the selected deposit-money banks in South East
Nigeria. A survey design was adopted for this study. Primary and secondary data was used in generating data for this research. Ten (10) deposit-money banks were selected from
the population of existing deposit-money banks in South East, Nigeria, with a
population of 18, 929 staff. Three Hundred and ninety two (392) sample
representatives were derived from the population through Taro Yamane formula. A
stratified random sampling procedure was used to select sample respondents from
banks in each state. The main instrument for data
collection was a structured questionnaire designed in a 5-point Likert scale. The researcher made use of both inferential and
descriptive statistics to analyze the collected data for the research.
Regression was used to test hypotheses i, ii and iii, hypotheses iv was tested using spearman correlation and ANOVA was
used to test hypotheses v and vi respectively. The findings of the study which was derived
from tested hypotheses revealed that there is significant
relationship between cohesive leadership system and market share in the
selected deposit-money banks in South East Nigeria (r = 0.705, p < 0.05); there is significant
relationship between role integration system and profitability in the selected
deposit-money banks in South East Nigeria (r = 0.490, p < 0.05); mutual communication
affects the revenue growth of the selected deposit-money banks in south East
Nigeria (R = 0.557, p < 0.05); there is significant relationship between team-based
management system and customer satisfaction in the selected deposit-money banks in South
East Nigeria (r = 0.682, p < 0.05); collaboration has significant effect on the effectiveness
of the selected deposit-money banks in South East Nigeria (R = 0.859, p <
0.05); and team size, team leadership, trust, team
heterogeneity and commitment are factors affecting team-based management system
in the selected deposit-money banks in South East Nigeria (p < 0.05). The
researcher therefore recommends that an open communication environment where
team members can feel free to share feedback, idea and even criticism should be
encouraged: team-based management system should be seen as an effective
operational strategy not as an adhoc strategy; the practice of collaboration
should be encouraged among employees.
